Tommy Mallet Opens Up About His ADHD Diagnosis: A Journey of Self-Discovery

Tommy Mallet, the former TOWIE star, has recently shared his personal journey leading up to his ADHD diagnosis at 29 years old. In a heartfelt conversation on the Boots' Taboo Talk podcast, Tommy delved into the signs he experienced before receiving the diagnosis, reflecting on how it impacted both his personal life and his relationships. His story sheds light on the often misunderstood condition of ADHD and offers a glimpse into his path to self-awareness.

The Moment of Realization

For Tommy, the turning point came when he found himself increasingly unable to deal with certain situations that many people might take for granted. One of the most surprising and telling signs was his reaction to something as innocent as babies crying. "Babies crying was the thing that got me actually diagnosed," Tommy confessed. He recalled a moment during a proposal to his now-wife, Georgia Kousoulou, in Mexico, when he found himself overwhelmed and agitated by the environment.

The proposal was supposed to be a beautiful, celebratory moment. Tommy had planned everything meticulously, including spending money on flowers and making sure the setting was perfect. Yet, instead of savoring the occasion, he was fixated on wanting to leave. "All I wanted to do was get out of the place we were in," Tommy said. He described how, despite being surrounded by beauty, he was overwhelmed by his surroundings, frustrated by small interruptions like the waitress coming to his table. "For me, I’m like ‘stop coming near me now,'" he recalled, realizing that his reactions were far from typical.

Impulsive Decisions and Strained Relationships

Before being diagnosed, Tommy's impulsivity was taking a toll on his relationship with Georgia. He reflected on how his tendency to make hasty decisions often led to chaos in his personal life. "I’d buy a car and then within a week, I’d have to buy another one, and then I’d sell that one, and then it just ended up being too much," Tommy explained. This pattern of erratic decision-making made it difficult for him to sustain any stability, both in terms of possessions and his relationship. "Georgia would come home, and I’d sold everything," he added.

At one point, Tommy even proposed an abrupt move to Spain, reflecting how his impulsivity was not just impacting his life, but also putting his relationship with Georgia at risk. "Me and Georgia were actually splitting up," he shared. "I just told her we’re moving to Spain, and it didn’t help that I was going through a really successful time of my life."

Tommy's struggles with impulsivity and restlessness were compounded by an inability to be fully present. He admitted that during this time, he was consumed by a constant sense of agitation. He even resorted to drinking excessive amounts of coffee—20 espressos a day—to try and manage his energy levels, but it only contributed to his erratic behavior.

A Supportive Partner and the Path to Diagnosis

As difficult as those years were for Tommy, he credits his partner, Georgia, for helping him navigate his struggles. He openly acknowledged the toll his behavior took on her but also praised her strength and support. "I wouldn’t have survived getting through this year, it wouldn’t have happened to me, honestly. I owe Georgia the world," he said. Tommy emphasized how Georgia's understanding and patience were critical during the most challenging times in their relationship.

It wasn’t until Tommy received his ADHD diagnosis that he began to understand the root of his issues. Looking back, he now sees that many of his behaviors, like restlessness, impulsive decision-making, and difficulty focusing, were symptoms of ADHD. "I was so bad to be around," he admitted, "I was aggressive. Unless you were talking about something I was interested in, I was like ‘don’t talk to me about it’."

Understanding ADHD in Adults

Tommy’s journey to understanding ADHD has been eye-opening, not just for him, but for those around him. ADHD, which is commonly diagnosed in childhood, can also be present in adulthood, though it often goes undiagnosed. ADHD in adults can manifest as both inattentiveness and impulsivity, leading to challenges in focus, organization, and relationships.

According to the NHS, ADHD symptoms in adults can include:

  • Difficulty concentrating and focusing
  • Carelessness and lack of attention to detail
  • Poor organizational skills
  • Impulsivity and risk-taking behaviors
  • Restlessness or feeling "edgy"
  • Difficulty with mood regulation, including irritability and impatience

In Tommy’s case, these symptoms were compounded by a range of emotional responses, including difficulty dealing with stress and maintaining consistent focus in conversations. He also found it hard to stay calm and avoid interrupting others—traits that are common in adults with ADHD.

The Diagnosis: A New Beginning

Tommy was finally diagnosed with ADHD in 2022, a significant moment of self-discovery for him. Understanding that he was not simply "impulsive" or "unfocused" by nature, but rather dealing with a neurological condition, gave him the tools to better manage his behavior and emotions. The diagnosis provided clarity and a pathway to seek the right support and strategies for coping with ADHD.

While ADHD is often associated with childhood, adults like Tommy can find it challenging to navigate the world without a diagnosis. It can take years for individuals to recognize the underlying causes of their struggles, which is why awareness and understanding of adult ADHD are so important.

Tommy's Message: Embracing the Journey

Tommy’s openness about his ADHD diagnosis has started an important conversation about mental health, particularly the challenges that come with adult diagnoses of conditions like ADHD. His story highlights the significance of self-awareness, patience, and seeking help when needed. It also underscores the importance of supportive relationships in navigating life’s challenges.

With Georgia by his side and a clearer understanding of his condition, Tommy is learning to manage his ADHD and find peace in the present. As he continues to open up about his experiences, he encourages others who may be struggling with similar issues to seek help and understand that they are not alone.

In his words, "I take my hat off to Georgia. For someone to be a mum and go through what she was going through with me as a person, I just owe her everything." Through his journey, Tommy is not only finding balance in his own life but is also helping others understand the complexity of ADHD and its impact on adults.
