Living With ADHD

There is a lot of stigma attached to those who have ADHD, which is why some people avoid getting their ADHD diagnosis. However, at Private ADHD, we believe that understanding your ADHD can be very empowering.

For example, Richard Branson, Bill Gates, and Elon Musk had/have all been diagnosed with ADHD and didn’t allow ADHD to hold them back from being famous and successful entrepreneurs; they instead used it as their superpower.

Due to the structural brain differences in people living with ADHD, it is known that individuals with ADHD tend to be more creative, inventive, energetic and imaginative.

Knowing that you are living with ADHD also makes you more self-aware of your adult ADHD symptoms, this can help you excel in tasks which you may typically be poor at and zone in on your strengths, e.g. set aside time each morning to time block your day if you struggle with time management.

Adult ADHD
Symptoms

If you suspect you are living with ADHD, untreated ADHD in adults can manifest in many different symptoms.

Common adult ADHD symptoms can be forgetfulness, difficulty concentrating, and bad time management, in teenagers this could look like procrastinating on their studies, being impulsive and talking excessively.

ADHD in children tends to be hyperactive but can also be inattentive. Some symptoms are getting distracted, not finishing chores, or not seeming to listen when being spoken to. Hyperactive symptoms are restlessness and boredom.

It can be liberating to know if you are living with ADHD since it helps make sense of lifetime difficulties you have been experiencing, whereas you previously may think you were lazy or perhaps not as intelligent as other people.

Untreated ADHD In Adults
What are The Risks?

Leaving ADHD untreated in adults can contribute to the development of other mental illnesses, such as depression. This is because people often feel frustrated and angry at their behavior if there is no diagnosis behind it.

Untreated ADHD in adults could then cause effects on relationships, job stability or studying.

It’s estimated over 2 million people in the UK have ADHD and haven’t been diagnosed, especially adults and females.

This is due to the myth that many people used to assume ADHD was a childhood disorder that went away as one becomes an adult; there are also a lot of stigmas around getting a diagnosis, and treatment isn’t always accessible.

Many people mask their ADHD symptoms through overcompensating, too, e.g. being a perfectionist. Due to this masking, it can be difficult to see if someone is really struggling with their ADHD, as overcompensating becomes the new normality for them.
